Choosing the right rice paper is not just about picking a size from a supplier’s catalog. For importers, food distributors, restaurant suppliers and retail brands, the right specification can make a real difference in how easy the product is to use, how it performs in the kitchen and how well it fits the target market.

If you are preparing a specification or RFQ for Vietnamese rice paper, here are the key points to consider.

1. Start with the Diameter

For round rice paper, diameter should match the final dish and the way your customers use it.

Smaller sizes are often convenient for smaller rolls, appetizers or individual portions. Medium and larger sizes are more suitable for fresh spring rolls (gỏi cuốn), where customers need enough surface area to wrap vegetables, noodles, herbs and protein without making the roll too tight.

For foodservice, it is worth asking your supplier about the actual usable diameter rather than looking only at the nominal size. A few centimeters can make a noticeable difference when a kitchen prepares hundreds of rolls every day.

For retail, the best size may depend on local consumer habits and the type of recipe you want to promote on the package.

2. Round or Square?

Round rice paper is the familiar choice for fresh spring rolls and is easy for consumers to recognize.

Square rice paper, on the other hand, can be practical for certain rolling and folding styles. The corners provide extra coverage and can make the wrapping process feel more straightforward for some applications.

Neither shape is automatically better. The right choice depends on your target recipe, customer preference and packaging concept.

3. Thickness Matters

Thickness affects how rice paper feels during preparation.

A thinner sheet can become soft quickly and is convenient for fresh rolls. However, it may require more careful handling.

A slightly thicker sheet can offer more strength and durability, which may be useful for fried spring rolls (chả giò) or foodservice applications where the sheets need to withstand handling before cooking.

When preparing an RFQ, don't simply ask for “thin” or “thick.” Ask the supplier to provide the actual thickness specification and recommended application so you can compare samples more accurately.

4. Choose the Right Pack Quantity

Pack size should match your sales channel.

For retail, smaller packs can be easier for households to use and can reduce the risk of unused rice paper being left after opening. Larger packs may work better for frequent consumers or value-focused markets.

For restaurants and foodservice, bulk packaging can be more practical because rice paper is used continuously. Your required quantity should also be considered alongside carton size, shipping efficiency and expected monthly consumption.

5. Build Your Specification Before Sending an RFQ

Before contacting a supplier, prepare a simple specification covering:

• Shape: round or square

• Diameter or dimensions

• Thickness

• Intended application: fresh rolls, fried rolls, etc.

• Packs per carton
